Officially submit to the Government the establishment of Phu Quoc city

Phu Quoc city, after its establishment, has a natural area of 575.29 km2 and a population of 177,540 people with 8 commune-level administrative units.

According to information from the Kien Giang Province Web Portal, Vice Chairman of Lam Dong People’s Committee has just signed a report to the Government about the establishment of Phu Quoc city.

According to the project, the city of Phu Quoc, after its establishment, has a natural area of 575.29 km2, a population of 177,540 people (reduced in terms of natural area and population size of Tho Chau commune) with 8 applications.

Including 2 wards (Duong Dong, An Thoi) and 6 communes (Ham Ninh, Duong To, Ganh Dau, Bai Thom, Cua Duong, and Cua Can). Reduced Hon Thom commune by entering An Thoi town to establish An Thoi ward.

In particular, Duong Dong urban area of 2,518.9 ha is defined as the central urban area of Phu Quoc Island. It is expected that by 2030 Duong Dong urban area will have a population of 240,000 people, of which migrants from the mainland will be about 183,000 people, tourists stay around 12,000 people.

Duong Dong urban is planned to develop with the idea that it is dynamic and impressive. This place will create a gateway for international exchange, promoting the development of the whole island. The most important highlight of Duong Dong urban area will be the avenue named after the late Prime Minister Vo Van Kiet.

This road will be the East – West axis, the starting point is the administrative center and the square. Vo Van Kiet Boulevard in the future is also a chain of services and resorts that create new values thanks to the restoration along the Duong Dong River and a tourism network that harmoniously connects natural elements – urban – tourism.

The whole Duong Dong urban area will be divided into 6 typical subdivisions: 467.4 ha of urban central area, 387 ha of Duong Dong lake gateway area, 522 northwestern coastal area, 2 hectares, the Southwest coastal area is 400.1 hectares wide, the Northeast coastal area is 513.4 hectares wide and the Southeast coastal area is 228.8 hectares wide.

The An Thoi urban area of 1,022 hectares is oriented to become an international port city, a technical hub and a non-tariff logistics center, and a trade and tourism center.

There are also light industrial parks, cultural centers, and historical sites associated with the long tradition of the local people. It is forecasted that by 2030, An Thoi urban area will have over 70,000 people.

An Thoi urban area is also divided into 6 functional sub-areas including passenger port, new southern urban area with many mixed projects along the main axis of South – North island, new urban area in the North, spreading resort area, freight terminal and existing development planning.

An Thoi urban area will arrange the highlights at 3 intersections of the main arteries, creating a unique landscape. There will also be a public beach area, community tourism service

Regarding the proposal to establish Phu Quoc city and the establishment of wards in Phu Quoc city, Phu Quoc district had consulted before with 62,284 / 64,263 voters in 10 communes / towns, in 61,870 voters agreed with the proposal to establish Phu Quoc City, accounting for 96.3%

With the arrangement of the communal administrative unit, the Hon Thom commune was merged into An Thoi town, Phu Quoc district to collect opinions from 14,885 / 16,330 voters in the two communes and towns, including 14,701 votes (90%).

Regarding the establishment of Duong Dong ward in Phu Quoc City, the district consulted 21,882 / 22,030 voters of Duong Dong town; of which 21,693 voters agreed (98.5%).

In August 2019, the leadership of the People’s Committee of Kien Giang Province sent a document to the Prime Minister proposing to suspend the formulation of the Phu Quoc island socio-economic development master plan into a special administrative and economic unit until a special special law is passed by the National Assembly.

At the same time, allowing Kien Giang province to organize the implementation of a new master plan on socio-economic development of Phu Quoc island along the direction of becoming Phu Quoc economic zone.
