Mr. Hoang Trung, Director of the Plant Protection Department, said that in March, due to the complicated situation of Covid-19 epidemic in Vietnam as well as in the world, Mr. Timothy Westbrook, an American plant quarantine specialist, in charge of the quarantine of fruits from Vietnam exported to the US and to be returned to the country, has greatly affected the quarantine progress of fresh fruits exported from Vietnam to the US.
To avoid disrupting export activities, the Plant Protection Department has cooperated closely with the Representative Office of the US Plant and Animal Quarantine Agency (APHIS) in Hanoi, requesting the US Embassy to temporarily appoint a staff member. Ministry of US Embassy in Vietnam and APHIS Office staff from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City are also responsible for monitoring irradiation treatment.
As a result, from the end of March up to now, Vietnam has been able to export more than 2,000 tons of fresh fruit, contributing to support farmers and businesses during the Covid-19 epidemic.
In the coming time, the Plant Protection Department will continue to work closely with the US Embassy in Vietnam, the US Department of Agriculture and especially the staff of APHIS Hanoi Office to promptly resolve all contents relating to trade in plant products of agricultural origin, contributing to the promotion of bilateral trade between the two countries.
The representative of the US Embassy in Vietnam said that in order to ensure the health of experts, Vietnam and the US had to carry out many procedures in the context of flight restrictions, medical isolation regulations.
Although the Covid-19 situation in the world is still complicated up to now, Vietnam is trying to control the epidemic very well.
At the same time, the US side is also interested in supporting fruit export, so it has considered and decided to send a plant quarantine expert back to Vietnam to work. This is a testament to the great US concern and support for Vietnam’s agricultural trade.
Specifically, on September 2, expert Timothy Westbrook came to Vietnam. So far, Mr. Timothy Westbrook has completed the medical isolation, got negative results for Covid-19 and started working at Son Son Irradiation Company (Binh Tan District, Ho Chi Minh City).
This will contribute to speeding up the phytosanitary progress for Vietnamese fruit lots exported to the US in the coming time.
At the press conference, Mr. Timothy Westbrook informed that the US is now a very important agricultural trading partner of Vietnam.
For exports of fresh fruits, starting in 2008, the US applies a pre-export inspection program.
Currently, there are 6 types of fresh fruits from Vietnam exported to the US, including dragon fruit, rambutan, longan, litchi, breast milk, and mango with a total turnover of about 20 million USD / year.
